New transplant unit in Ahmedabad - India

On February 7 and 8, 2025, the Sankalp India Foundation, in partnership with DKMS Foundation India and Cure2Children, inaugurated a state-of-the-art Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit at Health1 Super Speciality Hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This facility aims to address the pressing healthcare challenge posed by thalassemia, a hereditary blood disorder affecting over 12.000 new cases every year in India.

The newly inaugurated BMT unit is designed to meet the growing demand for stem cell transplantations in the region. It features 10 specialized pediatric BMT beds, essential apheresis care facilities, an outpatient center, and is staffed by a dedicated team of over 26 professionals, including four doctors and 14 nurses. This comprehensive setup ensures that up to 120 children can receive treatment annually, significantly enhancing the region's capacity to combat thalassemia.

DKMS Foundation India has committed ₹31.15 million (approximately €350,000) through its "Access to Transplantation" program to fund this initiative. This project reflects DKMS's holistic approach to fighting blood disorders by improving access to transplantation in low- and middle-income countries.

The Sankalp India Foundation, a Bangalore-based non-governmental organization, operates the new unit with medical advisory support from Cure2Children. Since its establishment in 2003, Sankalp has been dedicated to supporting voluntary blood donation and providing treatment for children with blood disorders. This collaboration marks the second BMT unit in India funded by DKMS, following the first in Bangalore in 2019. Together, these efforts have positively impacted the lives of over 570 children with thalassemia since 2018.

The inauguration event was marked by emotional testimonies from families whose lives have been transformed by bone marrow transplants. These stories underscore the profound impact of the new BMT unit, offering hope and a brighter future for families facing the challenges of thalassemia. 

This initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing critical healthcare challenges, bringing lifesaving care closer to home, and reducing barriers to treatment for children in need.
